Linked numbers are lighter and connect faster
The copy of WhatsApp that runs on our server for each linked number had been saving every photo and video it saw. For our busiest number that came to 1.8 GB, and that number signed in but would not finish loading. We stopped the downloads and cleared what had piled up. That number went from 3,036 MB to 892 MB and now connects in about 20 seconds. Nobody had to scan a QR code again.
Highlights
- Busiest linked number: 3,036 MB down to 892 MB
- A number that would not finish loading now connects in 18.7 to 25.2 seconds
- Photos, videos, audio and documents are no longer downloaded on our server
- Connected numbers are cleaned every 6 hours without a restart
- Login data untouched, no QR scan needed

Linked numbers no longer store photos and videos
Each linked number runs in its own browser on our server, with WhatsApp Web inside it. That WhatsApp Web was set to download incoming photos, videos, audio and documents, and it kept a copy of what it downloaded.
What we measured today, before changing anything:
- The data of all 35 linked numbers took 7,402 MB.
- 3,140 MB of that was WhatsApp Web's media cache, and 1,132 MB was browser add-ons WhatsApp never uses.
- For the busiest number alone, the media cache was 1.8 GB in 9,212 files, most of them from the last seven days.
Sending, auto-replies and delivery receipts do not need any of it.
What we changed:
- Automatic downloads of photos, videos, audio and documents are turned off in the copy running on our server. We checked inside a running session that all four are off. Your phone and your other linked devices keep their own settings.
